The Story Behind All This Blessing Stuff
It happened a few days after my father’s death, in that mind-numbing period of adjustment after someone we love leaves us. Having gone shopping for necessities for my trip back to my own home, I was standing in an otherwise empty aisle of a large chain store when suddenly I sneezed, the last vestiges of an allergy attack I’d fought earlier in the week.
Almost instantly, from the next aisle over I heard a voice call out, "Bless you," and then another, and another, and yet another. All in all, in the span of only a few seconds, I counted eleven different voices coming from every possible direction in the store, some saying "God bless you", others using the word "gezundheit," but all blessing me, all calling good down upon me.
At first I thought little of it. After all the idea of blessing someone when they sneeze is rooted in superstition, an archaic belief that in the act of sneezing the soul is thrown from the body, and a blessing is needed for spiritual protection. Today, it is usually offered as no more than a courtesy, a polite response that has come to be socially accepted and expected. But on that particular day, in the first few moments following all those blessings being called out to me, I began to notice a difference in myself: A slight shift in perception that left me feeling more connected and empowered than I had in days. It also left me, for the first time since my father’s passing, more confident that everything would be all right.
Driving back to my father’s house that day, I continued periodic "feelings" checks, marveling at how much stronger I felt. Later, sitting in my parent’s kitchen for what would be one of the last times, I recounted the story to my stepmother. "Do you think any of them realized what they were saying?" she asked. "Or was it just out of habit?"
"Just habit," I answered with a shrug, thinking about what a shame it was that people could give such a needed gift as a blessing and not even be aware of what they had done. "It should be a habit, this business of blessing others," I said a moment later. "But it would be nice if people actually knew they could and were making a difference."
A seed was planted that day and two years later it sprouted, awakening me one morning to a gentle soul-whisper that poured forth as the words of a special blessing. Feeling compelled to take pen and paper from my nightstand, I prodded myself into full wakefulness and then sat on the edge of the bed, like a secretary poised for dictation, pen ready to capture each syllable as the inspired words flowed into my awareness.
Because of the power of the internet, those words have since been sent across the planet and read by millions, and as I result, I have received thousands of letters from people telling me how May You Be Blessed has impacted their lives. And in each and every instance I have found myself blessed in return.
I have often wondered since if my newfound work as a dispatcher of blessings is the result of a serendipitous accident that placed me in a crowded store on a day when I was both prone to sneeze, and to listen to subtle nudges from the heart. Or was it, perhaps, that my father’s gentle spirit was present that day, inspiring others to offer blessings so that I might be lifted up?
Of course, it is a question I cannot answer, but I do know that since that time my life has changed remarkably. Each day is now entirely centered on the act of blessing and I have come to recognize it not only as one of the most powerful and practical ways we have for reconnecting with each other, our world and Life itself, but also the most phenomenal way possible to lead us to happiness and success. It is a discovery I now endeavor daily to share with all.
A blessing, I have come to realize, is a sweet release from pain; a sacred reminder that we are made of love and light and goodness and, as such, part of a greater and most wondrous whole. It is an ancient key to a successful and fulfilling life.
Today, whenever I share this phenomenal key with others, explaining how, as we each develop the habit of blessing others we are blessing our own lives, as well, I feel as if I have been given a wonderful gift. I realize once again how truly blessed I am. It is my hope that all who visit this site will be blessed in return. I could not ask for anything sweeter to my soul than that.

Dear Carol,
I don't think of our ability to bless others as a phenomena at all, Carol, but rather a natural part of our being, just as our ability to love is a natural part of who we are. And since we all spiritual beings, then any blessing we send forth from our heart would be spiritual, as well.
Occasionally, someone will write to tell me that blessings can only come from God and that we are not supposed to bless others. To me, that's like saying we should not love one another, because loving is God's job, or that we should not give to another, because only God can give. To deprive ourselves of the joy that blessing others brings us because we do not feel we worthy or "spiritual" is to deprive ourselves of the greatest gift God has bestowed upon us, our ability to give, support and sustain one another.
I am not "attributing" blessings to anything other than our ability to think a good thought and spread joy and love instead of condemnation and judgment. That is all.
I truly hope this answers your question.

It just came to me ,how we constantly look for huge Miracles to happen in our lives and we go about our day blindly not noticing the ones that are all around us.We expect them to come with a big brass band,Angels and trumpets. Those people who blessed you so unconsciously,had no idea the impact of those 2 words "Bless you" would have on the world. i'd like to share the profound effect your blessing experiment has had on me. i was at a low point in my life(feeling enormous self-hatred) when a friend sent me your blessing movie out of the blue. i instantly felt uplifted and didnot hate myself quite so much. i watched both of your movies over and over during a short period of time. i sent it out to many friends and obtained the e-mail addresses of several acquaintances to forward your website and movies to. since, i've become a believer in god and myself, now realizing that god resides in me. my husband and i now pray each night with our 7 and 10 year old daughters(something we have never done) and they are blessing others and thanking god for our wonderful life as well. i am joyful for the first time in my adult life since i've started blessing others and i believe that all of the blessings i have sent out have returned to me. be i now know that life is a gift and a joy as long as i continue to be grateful,seek the good in others and send them my blessings.

This was a wonderful experience and meditation shared by my minister and friend. I would only suggest that you use more culturally diverse photos so that people of color in particular around the world can better relate and see themselves as the objects being loved.(Just a recommendation sent in love.)

Dearest Kate: I have received your daily blessings and had my spirit uplifted by them for so long now it feels as if you have always been there as a part of my family. On September 2, 2007 my father passed away and a few days later following his memorial service we embarked on a driving journey of some 4500 kilometres from British Columbia to Saskatchewan and back to British Columbia. My mother, sister and I took my dad's two sisters back to their home, where he had been born and raised. We spent ten days together with and visiting my father's surviving siblings. We cried some healing tears and laughed about some of the wonderful times and memories we each cherish of him. Upon returning home today I realized that its been nearly a month since I received my "daily blessing" due to being away and just how much I miss that wonderful soul sustainance you so generously provide. I too believe that every soul needs to be nurtured and reminded of their importance and place in the creator's grand scheme for this world....as you have certainly found yours. Thank you. My goal is to try to reach a needy soul each day for the rest of my life and hopefully help one person as you have helped me. Your blessings have helped ease the pain of losing my dad and helped me to reach out to try to ease the pain my family has felt at his loss as well. My immediate family has been fractured and splintered for nearly a decade, my father's dying wish was that it could be brought back together once more. You have given me the courage to continue striving toward that goal as well and once again, I thank you for that as well. Kate, please never give up on this wonderful venture of yours and bless you for sharing it with us.

Whenever I feel low, I open my inbox and re-read your inspiring mails and watch your movie. In spite of reading and watching the same contents again, I feel uniqueness in each mail. And every time the content conveys me different positive messages.
Until I saw your movie, I used to wonder about the existence of philanthropist on earth. But your mails and movies testify that such people do exist.

Thank you soooo much for this website. One of the video's was sent to me by an EX-sister-in-law, and I emphasize "ex" because that's what makes this even more special! It's been over 15yrs since my divorce, I still cry when I feel the pain/healing of this event today. For sake of being short and to the point about this, forgiveness and love are the healers. I believe the hardest thing to do is completely forgive myself. I watched that video and others multiple times crying with the same tears of forgiveness & love each time!!!

Dear, DEAR Kate, Thank you so much for this website. I think you may have saved my life, and quite possibly my marriage. We are at the LOWEST point imaginable (to us anyway). We have had to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy, we'll be losing our home shortly (Christmas time, ironically enough) and don't know yet where we'll live or how we will afford rent BUT (it's a BIG BUT) we have each other, we have our children, I have a job that I love (I teach high school) and I keep thinking that it will all be OK. Without you, without this, I may have given up and... I don't even know. We could use a little extra blessing, though, as it IS hard to keep smiling through all this

1. I have learned that Blessings come from the Good within me and the Good that
is in me is the God in me.
I feel this really opens up my heart and mind to the Spirit within.
2. In the process of blessing other people places and things, really blesses me in return.
I feel that blesses return right back to the person that blesses.
3. I believe that thinking that everything is GOOD makes me more of a positive person.
Feeling more positive about life and about the GOOD in all things reminds me that God is that
Good in all things and that truly makes me feel wonderfully blessed.
I have really enjoyed this challenge and I pray to continue to look for the GOOD/God in every person,
place, thing, or situation that comes into my life and the life around me. I pray to stay open, aware,
awake and ready to Be a Blessing where ever I can be. I thank you God for this challenge and for Kate for sending all the readings each day to me and to others. Continue to bless this Blessing way Challenge that it reach
more and more people around the world. I believe this can really help to change peoples hearts, minds and souls.

***I was just recently introduced to this site. I love the "experiment" of blessing total strangers! I have done this for sometime now, when for some reason, the thought has crossed my mind, I would say,"God please bless (him/her)". I noticed that I am in turn blessed with a peacefulness, and thankfulness for all of my blessings. Also, I noticed a feeling of assuredness that all is well.

Theses movies are absolutely marvellous. Blessings are spiritual. In the Scriptures it says "Never return evil for evil, return a BLESSING instead", so all of us can give a blessing.

I found this site by pure accident or divine interaction, having searched for something else. Earlier this year, my partner died, who was my rock and shield in this world, who believed in the power of words and actions to support and heal. He used his powers to give me strength after my previous partner and his friend, died from injuries received in a road accident.
Without his presence I felt lost, and as I approached Christmas without him, I could only feel sadness and pain, and taste the loneliness which I constantly feel.
I watched May You Be Blessed, and although I cried, I felt touched with a healing hand, shielded, comforted, and .. most importantly... loved!
Yes, both have gone, but I hold them in my heart, and I feel they both love me still. Moreover, I feel the love I had for them is reflected tenfold just when I needed it most.
When I need a lift, I just replay the movie. I've since passed the link to others who also have felt a very positive lifting of the soul.

Everything in your site is beautiful. I love the idea of blessings. When people ask me how I am I almost always answer "Blessed"! Because I am! I loved your movies and I read some of the comments. What is at the core of your being? Someone sent me one of the movies here about blessings and although it was as I said beautiful I have to ask where is JESUS in all of this. Love can only be given once it's received. We receive from the "Father" and become a channel of that love to others. After all that is the greatest commandment. Love the Lord you God with all your heart, with all your soul and all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself. My prayer to "God" is bless me that I might be a blessing to others. That has always been "His" plan! I read I Corinthians 13 sometimes 2 or more times a day. It's all about love and blessing others. I do love your idea and we should all follow that challenge to be a blessing to others, but not forgetting Who gets the credit. We are just the arms that God uses to hug His people. After all that is the "Great commission.
Be Blessed by the "BEST" as you are a blessing.

Wondering what happened to those wonderfull messages I used to get monthly, I found this weblog and noticed that the last message was in october. Was there a change in website? This is my first visit to your blog and I'm quite sure it isn't the last. It is so interesting to read how a seed is sown in our hearts without us having the faintest notion, and how it sprouts and grows stronger till it produces more seed to be sown.Your story reiterates that our life's worth does not lie in being busy but in being fruitful. Thank you Kate. I have been receiving your e-mails for the past year or more and I know I am blessed by them. If only more people recognize how blessed we all are just to be alive and show that gratitude in our attitude, this world will be a better place overnight.
Life is a gift from God... not an entitlement. What we do with our life is our gift back to God. By being a blessing to others we are being a blessing to God. Since God owns everything in this world, the least we can do is to thank Him daily.

Before I knew this Blessing Challenge, my niece sent me a message on "May you be blessed". I found it so interesting and full of positive thoughts that I become curious and clicked on and on until I was able to find this Experiment Blessings created by Kate Novak and staff.I signed myself
up and now as Kate has warned me that I have to be careful this might changed me and it did. Up to now I had been blessing people around me everyday and I felt lighter each day. I used to be angry easily but now I can sense that I became more peaceful and serene. Let me thank you all connected with this Blessing Experiment. More blessings come your way and mine. God bless!!

How I laughed about your teething troubles yesterday and I'm so glad you also saw the funny side to it! I too have had so "Lucy" days recently, but pull myself up short when I feel I'm going down for the third time! Heck life is too short to worry about a few speed bumps in our daily routine.
I try to see humor in many things I do and I am the first one to laugh at myself. If I can't at least bring a smile to someone's face I feel I have failed. Laughing is such good exercise!
You are a true Blessing yourself Kate......love to you and all your family (including the doggies!) and keep up the wonderful work you do.

With the death of your father was it his guiding hand that got you to do your business, I believe it is. We may not always see with our eyes but we can hear through our hearts. If you weren't the enemy would not care and everything would have went smoothly. I know that despite the challenge people were blessed abundantly. Very well said. The strength in good is a huge challenge for evil. The bond you are creating Kate is a blessing to the world and I for one feel blessed. Isn't it amazing how one can have such a strong feeling of love for someone they have never met personally? That should say something about the work you are doing. God will continue to bless you Kate it's a given. This is all he expects from us is to be good to each other. He created this place from love and unfortunately through free will some have taken the wrong turn. But the good thing is they can turn around once they realize they've hit a dead end.

In re: to your most recent daily blessing, I don't know what the problem is, It fit perfectly in my Outlook Express. Now, it only fills 2/3 of the space. I like the old format. My only suggestion would be to chose a compatible background color or image to eliminate the stark white. Otherwise, it's beautiful. Keep up the good work, and know that you are loved, and a blessing to me. Mike

Dear Kate, This is plain wonderful. I had been contemplating on the issue of how to live in such a way, that one is a blessing to the world, in one's every wakeful moment. Somehow never came up to it. Could just not remain in positive, blessing state of mind continuously. Then came across your concept. Just keeping on reminding myself that `It is always good and it is always better to bless' has brought about a monumental shift in the content and direction of my consciousness. I cannot express it in words. I can just say, ``yes, I am feeling all the goodness around me, every wakeful moment - thus am blessed and a blessing. The purpose of my being born is being achieved. I am living in alignment with the purpose of creation''

Thank you so much for blessings and your encouraging words. My sister sent them to me, and I could not have received them at a better time. I think about dying every day but I don't give up, taking one day at a time with gods love and encouraging words from my sister. And others like Joyce Meyer etc. Thank You

What an absolutely wonderful and action-provoking question! My first thought was that I really should respond to as many replys as possible, and my next thought was the very reasonable excuse why I could not: time constraints, difficult to manage, etc. And then I realized that I was thinking 'I should' instead of "I AM" and so immediately changed my mind to affirm, "I am capable of responding to all of these messages of love and gratitude that are so freely sent to me each day and from this point forward, I will. So thank you, Lois, for pushing me out of "woulda,shoulda,coulda" into the land of AM. It is, as always, a beautiful and loving and blessed place to be.

And may I say, BLESS those who blessed your sneeze on that day. For not all have the courage to speak out and say it, even though it might be a custom.
What makes it even more grand in my eyes is that they shouted it over an aisle.
It's one thing when you pass a stranger, make eye contact and bless them for a sneeze ... it's quite another thing to say it SIGHT UNSEEN over a distance.
I believe your Dad is *smiling* and so very proud.
